Today, Korean-American dance music sensation SOHMI releases her new Recital EP on Permission / Thrive Music.

Rounding out the final chapter of SOHMI's anticipated Recital EP, the titular track is an edgy dance-pop cut filled with sultry vocal accents and entrancing celestial tones. Through a transportive, ethereal soundscape, SOHMI showcases a harmonious blend of her self-pioneered ‘minimal pop-tech’ genre.

As a whole, Recital represents SOHMI’s most personal project to date, touching on themes of escapism and metamorphism. Marking her debut 4-track EP, Recital is a testament to SOHMI’s transcendence as a multi-talented singer, producer, instrumentalist, and DJ. Recital features SOHMI’s previous singles 'Missin U', 'Only One', and 'Somebody' and arrives ahead of her return to Coachella for this year’s Do LaB stage.

Regarding the track, SOHMI said, “I wanted to end the EP with something really different, and take the listener outside the expected club-structured farem instead into something that simply feels and sounds like a dream. ‘Recital’, the track, is the soundtrack to all the many daydreams I’ve had over the course of my childhood and life, which were always about becoming some kind of performer for as long as I can remember. While I’m singing over nearly the entire track, there are no real lyrics, just freestyled humming, as one might while daydreaming about becoming something and somebody bigger than themselves in an alternate version of life. Then when the EP starts over again, you find yourself there. You begin at ‘Somebody’.”

Along with the EP, SOHMI has shared an intimate trailer video capturing the essence of the project. Offering an autobiographical look into SOHMI’s life, the trailer watches her transition from a classically trained pianist into the poised electronic musician fans have come to know and love. The visual accompaniment acts as an extension of SOHMI’s musical narrative, indulging the literal and metaphorical motifs around personal growth and acceptance that are strung throughout the EP.

Overcoming societal stereotypes and parental pressures as a first generation Korean-American, SOHMI has earned herself a rare position in underground dance music not often seen from the world she comes from. Now based in Los Angeles, SOHMI spent most of her life growing up in Hong Kong and Korea before moving to NY to pursue a career in the music industry and eventually the world of tech and startups when she was 21. A graduate of Duke University, SOHMI traded her expected traditional career path and background in tech for the chance to explore her creativity through the immersive house and techno scenes she’d come to love after a life-changing move to Los Angeles in 2016. Less than a year after launching her artist career, SOHMI performed at Ultra Korea 2019, where she was able to prove herself to her family and earned the support of her parents.

From becoming the first Korean-American resident of LA’s renowned underground house and techno club, Sound, to founding her own record label Permission, SOHMI’s acceleration through the electronic scene is nothing short of impressive. Newer to the scene with her debut release in 2020, SOHMI’s training as a classical pianist combined with her modern take on dance music as a producer and vocalist quickly won her places on the most revered stages in the music world. In 2022, SOHMI rose to new heights, performing at festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lightning In A Bottle, and Electric Forest. Top talents such as RÜFÜS DU SOL, Kaskade, Boris Brejcha, and Hot Since 82 have hand selected SOHMI to open for their shows across the US, recognizing her undeniable and far-ranging talent.

SOHMI invites fans to get lost in the minimal pop-tech sounds of her new Recital EP out now.
