How Brunch Electronik Festival is Embracing Sustainability

With an international reputation as one of the most ecologically minded festival brands in the industry, Brunch Electronik takes special care of its environment for all of its events, in order to create a better impact on the planet. Reducing waste as much as possible through various initiatives outlined below, the festival has managed to slash carbon footprint, with the aim of eventually becoming a zero waste event brand.

B! HUB: Exploring Innovative Circularity Solutions

For the first time this year – as it readies its first ever three-day event from August 11-13 – B! HUB presents itself as the new space within Brunch Electronik Festival, encompassing pioneering actions in sustainability and circularity. New for 2023 B! HUB emerges as a unique space within the festival, dedicated to promoting sustainability and circularity in its various actions. This pioneering initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the environment and fostering responsible practices. In addition, and in order to generate a greater positive impact on the environment, part of the festival's energy will come from solar panels positioned in strategic places.

Part of the space will feature exhibition stands constructed with ghost fishing nets rescued from the Mediterranean Sea by the NGO Ghost Diving Spain, and their materials will be 100% recycled. The Catalan NGO will be presenting their work and good practices as well.

In addition, a Mediterranean Sound Space ‘Refugio Sonoro’ has been created, where visitors can relax while enjoying a cup of good specialty, sustainable and local Syra Coffee whilst listening to unique soundscapes of the Mediterranean created by Sound Earth Legacy (SEL) in collaboration with international artists.

SEL is a sustainable creative agency and sonic branding aiming to record and preserve the sounds of the earth that will probably disappear due to climate change.

Beyond this, the Brunch Electronik Festival team works to develop innovative solutions for the materials entering the festival. A specific stand will be showing all their last work, as well as their last collaboration with NUNCA (Necesitamos UN CAmbio - ‘We Need A Change’), which works at the intersection of art, design and architecture.

Brunch Electronik Festival has teamed up with the Barcelona-based coffee brand Syra, who aligned themselves with our sustainable objective by presenting SYRA LAB, an initiative to rethink and reformulate how people approach coffee, from farm to cup. Their mission is to develop direct farm connections, share insightful industry research, circular solutions, and sustainability innovation to reimagine the coffee supply chain.

From the perspective of industrial involution, they combine digital fabrication with traditional techniques and materials to find solutions with the least possible environmental impact. They will design specific pieces for the festival built with the sand resulting from the crushing of glass bottles (alcohol bottles that become waste in the bars of each Brunch Electronik event). In this way they manage to recover waste materials and transform them into useful objects for another purpose, with the aim of being a 100% circular celebration. In this case, the Barcelona studio will create pieces for children to play with in the family area of Brunch Electronik (Petit Brunch that will be part of the Festival on Sunday August 13th at Jardins de Joan Brossa), and will design stretching pieces for festival-goers.

For many years, all Brunch Electronik events have been working towards circularity by implementing different sustainable actions. The festival has also worked hard to become a safe and inclusive celebration, caring for its community by supporting the neighborhoods that host its celebrations.

As in every event, Brunch Electronik strengths its commitment to create inclusive and safe spaces and celebrations, with an LGBTIQ+ and Feminist Stand managed by the Observatori Contra l'Homofòbia, as well as a Prevention and Safe Party Stand managed by the NGO Avatar and its renowned Safe Space/Espacio Seguro, where festival attendees will have the support of professional psychologists to assist anyone who needs it during the event. Moreover, ongoing dialogue with the local community will be maintained to minimize the potential impact on the neighborhood.

All plastic waste including straws and PET bottles have been eliminated, with plastic water bottles in the bars have been replaced by glass bottles – the only material that is completely recyclable. This is how the festival closes the cycle and manages to contribute to a lower environmental impact. In addition, in pursuit of the goal of eradicating plastic from the festival, only compostable containers are used in the Foodtrucks areas.

Re-Cup solid plastic cups are used across the site. The now legendary reusable cups help the environment by ensuring that everyone who orders at the bars uses the same cup the next time, thus eliminating the use of disposable cups. At the end of each event, the public can recover the euro overcharged on the first drink by returning the glass together with the token at the Refund stand. The Re-Cups have become a true icon of Brunch Electronik.

Re-Cup has also planted 1195 trees in deforested areas in deforested areas of Spain and Portugal to reduce their CO2 footprint.

In order to generate a greater positive impact on the environment, part of the festival's energy will come from solar panels positioned in strategic places.

All waste is separated, both inside and outside the bars. Prior to this, all employees are trained in the correct separation of waste and, consequently, in the proper recycling of this waste.

Cigarette butts from the public are collected in ashtrays available throughout the festival site. Cigarette filters contain microplastics, which can contaminate up to 10 liters of water with a single cigarette butt. That's why at Brunch Electronik we collect these cigarette butts to recycle them and turn them into recycled plastic objects.

Brunch Electronik's Historic Clean-up Mountain

Finally, and once again this year, Brunch Electronik is able to count once again on the collaboration of its festival attendees organising their annual mountain clean-up.

The clean-up day takes place annually in the mountain of Montjuic. Before starting with the collection, the organisation was responsible for giving a small workshop for all the volunteers, where they were taught how to separate the rubbish correctly, using gloves correctly, tweezers and bags provided collecting more than 800kg of rubbish from the natural environment of the mountain of Barcelona.

Brunch Electronik Festival takes place in Barcelona from 11-13 August, 2023. For tickets and further info, head to https://festival.brunchelectronik.com/
